چکیده

Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) is a clonal, myeloproliferative disease that develops when a single, pluripotential, haemopoetic stem cell acquires the Philadelphia chromosome. CML was the first haematological malignancy to be associated with a specific genetic lesion. First recognised in 1 45, CML exhibits a consistent chromosomal abnormality in leukaemic cells, identified in 1960 by Nowell and Hungerford, termed the Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome. The cytogenetic hallmark of CML was identified in 1973 as the reciprocal translocation t(9;22)(q34:11). Furthermore, in 19 4, the ABL (Abelson) proto-oncogene was identified as being involved in this translocation. Breakthroughs in cancer biology have led to extensive characterisation of CML and it is now heralded as a ‘model’ of cancer.

Detection of abl/bcr Fusion Gene in Patients Affected by Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia by Dual-Colour Interphase Fluorescence in situ Hybridisation

Conventional cytogenetic is the standard technique for detection of Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Evaluation of abelson murine leukemia/breakpoint cluster region (abl/bcr) fusion using dual-colour fluorescence in situ hybridization (D-FISH) is an alternative approach allowing rapid and reliable detection of the disease. We employed the technique of interphase D...

Expression Profiling of Microarray Gene Signatures in Acute and Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia in Human Bone Marrow

Background Classification of cancer subtypes by means of microarray signatures is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore as a potential to transform pathological diagnosis nonetheless, measurement of Indicator genes in routine practice appears to be arduous. In a preceding published study, we utilized real-time PCR measurement of Indicator genes in acute lymphoid leukaemia (ALL) and acute m...

Incidence and Pattern of Childhood Leukaemia in Basrah, Iraq during 2003-2007

Background: Environment of Basrah is seriously contaminated with chemical leukomogens as a result of recent military conflicts. Many studies in the past few years have reported an increase in the incidence of leukemia in Basrah. This study was designed to study the risk and pattern of childhood leukemia in Basrah, Iraq, from 2003 to 2007.Materials and Methods: This hospital-based cancer registr...

The Effect of Monophosphoryl Lipid A on Maturation of DCs from Patients with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia

Background: Generation of monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MDDC) is induced in the presence of GM-CSF and IL-4, and a maturation stimulus is added to the monocyte culture to obtain mature Dendritic Cells (DCs) suitable for therapy. TNF-α is the most common cytokine used for activating DCs and generating mature MDDC either alone or in combination with other cytokines. Objective: To compare effe...

Automated Detection and Classification of Leukaemia

ARTICLE INFO Leukaemia stands for blood cancer that begins in the bone marrow and results in the generation of abnormal cells. Leukaemia is mainly classified as acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML).This thesis makes an effort to devise a methodology for the detection and classification of Leuk...
